Provitamin B5 has the ability to work as a humectant. Natural humectants are known to serve dual purposes. They are known to be able to physically attract moisture to the surface of the skin and deliver major moisture and nutrients to the deepest layers of the skin. Some humectants can improve the skin’s natural ability to hydrate itself. Provitamin B5 is a humectant and is a water-binding substance that both attracts and retains water.

As a humectant, this provitamin stabilises the skin’s barrier function, reducing the amount of water that is lost through the skin and evaporated into the air. By applying this to your face, you will do several things for your skin. One benefit is increasing the skin’s hydration. You will also be improving your skin’s softness and elasticity. This makes provitamin B5 ideal for the treatment of dry, scaly or rough skin.

When products such as lotions, creams, masks or ointments containing provitamin B5 are absorbed by the skin, the provitamin transforms into vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) This has a natural ability to moisturise, soothe, heal & regenerate the skin.

This vitamin goes beyond moisturising. It is also able to act as a skin healer and protectant. When applied topically to the skin it offers a relief from possible itchiness and discomfort and can also reduce redness. Wounds that are treated with provitamin B5 have resulted in regenerated tissue that is more solid and elastic.

A study reported in 2002 by the “Journal of Dermatological Treatment” noted that provitamin B5 enhanced the repair of the skin barrier while reducing inflammation at the same time. Another randomised trial involved 246 women who used moisturisers containing provitamin B5 for ten weeks total. Out of all the participants, 207 saw improvements after using B5 in their moisturisers. These 207 women equal 84% of everyone involved. Their skin texture was evaluated after ten weeks and it was found that skin tone was markedly improved after the use of provitamin B5. The barrier function of the skin was also examined and there was a stabilisation result for this aspect of the skin as well.
